The Library has many books to assist homeschoolers. Information for both student and teacher is available in circulating and non-circulating materials. These can be found in the library’s online catalog under the Subject Headings “Home schooling” and “Education-parent participation.” The call numbers 371 and 372 cover educational subjects for teachers while 649 has a variety of information on parenting topics.
The Main Library and branches maintain vertical files of material on a vast number of subjects for use in the library only. The Children’s Room at the Main Library houses a collection of materials for teachers, which is available upon request for use of copying inside of the library.
The Library’s collection includes many books on audiocassette for all ages, videos for children and adults, fiction and non-fiction videos, and music on CD. Art works (pictures and sculpture) may be checked out from the Main Library.
The Library has computers, Internet access, children’s educational programs, such as Barney and the Magic School Bus, in addition to encyclopedias and word processing. Children under 15 may use these with parental permission and guidance.
Library branches can give tours of their resources to home school groups by prior arrangement with the librarian. Information can be tailored to the needs of a particular group, e.g., science or social studies fair information, or a particular subject.
A wide range of programs for all ages is presented at libraries throughout the system year round. Programs may be hands-on arts and crafts, informational, educational, or pure fun.
Storytimes for children of all ages are offered at all branches throughout the year.
The Summer Reading Program encourages children to maintain their reading skills during the summer by offering incentives for reading. All branches present a variety of special programs for children and young adults during June and July.
Free tutoring in science and math is offered at certain branches during the school year.
The library owns overhead projectors, 8mm and 16mm movie projectors that may be available, by prior arrangement, for personal use by patrons within the library on a limited basis.
Older children and young adults have a wealth of information on colleges, financial aid and scholarships, and careers available to them in the Young Adult section of the library.
